Poverty x Education


is the scarcity or the lack of a certain (variant) amount of material possessions or money. Poverty is a multifaceted concept, which may include social, economic, and political elements. Absolute poverty, extreme poverty, or destitution refers to the complete lack of the means necessary to meet basic personal needs such as food, clothing and shelter.

The threshold at which absolute poverty is defined is considered to be about the same, independent of the person’s permanent location or era. On the other hand, relative poverty occurs when a person who lives in a given country does not enjoy a certain minimum level of “living standards” as compared to the rest of the population of that country. Therefore, the threshold at which relative poverty is defined varies from country to another, or from one society to another 

Providing basic needs can be restricted by constraints on government’s ability to deliver services, such as corruption, tax avoidance, debt and loan conditionals by the brain drain of health care and educational professionals. Strategies of increasing income to make basic needs more affordable typically include welfare, economic freedoms and providing financial services.

Poverty reduction is still a major issue (or a target) for many international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank.

Education is a powerful driver of development and one of the strongest instruments for reducing poverty and improving health, gender equality, peace, and stability. Developing countries have made tremendous progress in getting children into the classroom and the majority of children worldwide are now in primary school. Nevertheless, some 260 million children are still out of primary and secondary school.

Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves.[1] Education can take place in formal or informal settings and any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational. The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy.

Education is commonly divided formally into such stages as preschool or kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and then college, university, or apprenticeship.

When it comes to poverty and education, many children face difficult situations. According to Carlos Lee in his doctoral dissertation, Evaluating the Effectiveness of Supplemental Educational Services in Large Texas School Districts, “Poverty, regardless of level, is robustly linked to reduced academic achievement.” Students who live in poverty come to school every day without the proper tools for success. As a result, they are commonly behind their classmates physically, socially, emotionally or cognitively.

In order to understand more the connection between Poverty and Education the students of Gusa Regional Science High School- X conducted a small scale survey that focuses on poverty and education and were answered by certain High School students in the campus thru the use of the internet.

40 people responded on our survey in which 24 (60% ) are girls and 16 (40%) are boys
Out of 40 people 1(2.5%) is 12-13 years old, 23(57.5%) are 14-16 years old, 16(40%) are 17-18, and none are 19 years old
Out of 40 people; no G7 Student participated, 1(2.5%) are Grade 8 Students , 7 (17.5%) are Grade 9 Students, 9 (22.5%) are Grade 10 Students , 13 (32.5%) are Grade 11 Students ad 10 (25%) are Grade 12 students.
